Not perfectly apples to apples: each school defines and measures placement differently. These numbers are useful context, not a direct ranking.

WE LIKE OUR NUMBER.

But getting people into advertising is the minimum.

Serious portfolio schools should get people hired. So once you know a school can get you through the door, there’s a more important question to ask: how good will you be when you walk through it?

A placement percentage tells you if they got in.The portfolio tells you how ready they were.

THE PART AFTER THE PORTFOLIO

Don't just finish the portfolio.Launch it.

Graduating doesn't end the process. After Q5, students keep refining their books and presentations. Then they present their strongest work live to recruiters from agencies around the country, and DAD keeps helping after graduation.

01

Finish Q5.

Build the portfolio. Refine the projects. Turn a year of work into a book you're ready to show.

02

Keep getting feedback.

The quarter ends. The critique doesn't. We keep helping sharpen the work and the way you present it.

03

Recruiter Debut.

Present your strongest work live to recruiters from agencies around the country. Not a portfolio upload. A pitch.

04

Keep going.

Graduation isn't a handoff. DAD stays involved as the portfolio becomes interviews, opportunities, and paid work.

FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TABLE

“I’m always amazed at the level of professionalism when I’ve attended a DAD portfolio event. The student’s portfolio work is super polished and ready for the next level — a job at an agency.

Eddie Woolsey
VML / Talent Acquisition

Don't just finish the portfolio.Launch it.

THE LAST MILE

All three put your work in front of the industry. We also make you defend it.

Recruiter access is table stakes. VCU has Recruiter Session. Miami has Portfolio Review. DAD has Recruiter Debut. The difference is what you're expected to do once you're in the room.

VCU Brandcenter

Recruiter Session

Students host tables, share their portfolios, meet recruiters, and interview.

Miami Ad School

Portfolio Review

Students cycle through portfolio interviews with creative leaders and recruiters.

Denver Ad School

Recruiter Debut

Present your strongest work live. Explain the problem. Show the thinking. Sell the big idea. Answer the questions. Defend the work. Just like in an agency.

WHY THAT MATTERS

Recruiter Debut isn't just a portfolio review. It's a rehearsal for the career.

HOW DAD BUILDS A PORTFOLIO

Start with a lot.End with only the best.

A great portfolio isn't made by deciding your first six ideas are precious. It's made by creating so many possibilities that you can afford to become brutally selective.

01 / THE BRIEFS
FEELS LIKE: LET'S GO.
60
briefs.
THREE QUARTERS OF CONCEPTING.

Every brief asks for a big idea. Sometimes it becomes a campaign. Sometimes it becomes a stunt. Either way, you're solving another brand problem from scratch.

Q2 10 2 CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT CLASSES × 5 BRIEFS
Q3 20 2 CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT CLASSES × 10 BRIEFS
Q4 30 3 CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT CLASSES × 10 BRIEFS
ABOUT 6 IDEAS FOR EVERY BRIEF
02 / MAXIMUM POSSIBILITY
FEELS LIKE: HOLY SHIT, THAT'S A LOT.
360
ideas.
60 BRIEFS × ABOUT 6 IDEAS EACH.

Not 360 masterpieces. That's impossible. Some ideas are smart. Some are weird. Some are obvious. Some suck. The volume is what teaches you the difference. You stop treating every thought like it's precious and start learning how to recognize what's actually good.

03 / CUTDOWN DAY

Then everything goes on the table.

Hundreds of ideas come back out. We spread them across the school and start judging. Some old favorites die. Some forgotten ideas suddenly look brilliant. Students defend the ones they believe in. Nothing survives because of nostalgia.

These aren't finished portfolio pieces yet. They're simply the ideas that have earned another look. Some get combined. Some evolve. Some still die. The bar keeps moving up.

06 / THE PORTFOLIO
6
The best six.
IDEALLY AT LEAST 3 BIG INTEGRATED CAMPAIGNS + 3 MORE THINGS YOU'D BE PROUD TO PUT YOUR NAME ON.
THIS IS THE WHOLE IDEA.

You don't need 360 great ideas. You need 360 chances to find six.

MAKE MORE. JUDGE HARDER. KEEP LESS.
THE OTHER HALF OF THE CREATIVE TEAM

You don't get one partner. You learn how to partner.

Great creative work rarely happens alone. Copywriters and art directors have to disagree, compromise, defend ideas, kill ideas, divide the work, share the credit, and somehow still want to grab a drink afterward. So we practice that, too.

OUR BELIEF

Being good at ideas is only half the job. You also have to be good at making ideas with somebody else.

BEFORE CUTDOWN

New brief. New chemistry.

ROTATION 01
YOU
+
PARTNER A

Maybe you click immediately. Great. Don't get too comfortable.

ROTATION 02
YOU
+
PARTNER B

Different taste. Different process. Different way of getting to the idea.

ROTATION 03
YOU
+
PARTNER C

Maybe this one is harder. That might be the more useful rep.

ROTATION 04
YOU
+
PARTNER D

You learn when to push, when to listen, and when the other person's idea is simply better.

ROTATION 05
YOU
+
PARTNER E

By now you're not just learning everybody else. You're learning yourself.

•••
AND KEEP ROTATING. THE POINT IS TO WORK WITH EVERYONE, NOT FIND ONE PERSON AND HIDE.
HARD.
PARTNERING CAN BE ONE OF THE HARDEST PARTS OF THE JOB.

Good. Practice it here.

At an agency, you don't always get to choose the person across from you. You do have to figure out how the two of you make something better than either of you would have made alone. That is a creative skill.

01 Disagree.

Fight for the idea without making the fight personal.

02 Listen.

Recognize when the better answer didn't come from you.

03 Adapt.

Different people need different ways of working.

The finished idea belongs to the team, not the loudest person in it.

THEN CUTDOWN CHANGES EVERYTHING.

The ideas survive first. Then we build the teams around them.

For the final portfolio push, partnerships can change again. Teams are assigned around the projects that survived Cutdown, and the students who make the final work share that work together. The goal isn't protecting territory. It's making the strongest portfolio possible.

WHICH IS WHY WHO'S IN THE ROOM MATTERS.

Your classmates aren't just classmates. They're part of your education.

Their taste affects the conversation. Their work ethic affects the partnership. Their ideas raise—or lower—the bar around you. That's one reason we're interested in more than whether an applicant already knows how to make a great ad.

05 / THE PRICE

So what are you paying extra for?Price only means something next to what you get.

Cheaper doesn't automatically mean better. More expensive doesn't automatically mean more valuable. After comparing the work, the training, the time, and the outcomes, the question is simple: what are you actually getting for the money?

+$11–13K

+9 months vs. DAD

What are the extra money and extra nine months buying you?

New York costs $11,000 more than DAD. Miami costs nearly $13,000 more. Miami Ad School gives you a longer program and a broader curriculum. That may be exactly what you want. But after comparing the current work, the reps, and the training itself, the premium should have an answer.

THE VCU PREMIUM

+$28.7K*

+9 months vs. DAD

VCU is selling you something DAD isn't: graduate school.

You get a two-year graduate experience and a master's degree. If the credential matters to you, that's real value. But for a creative career, the degree doesn't replace the portfolio.

A weaker book with an M.S.is still a weaker book.

We were founded to be the cheapest of the best options and we plan to stay that way.

03 / THE TIME

How much school do you actually need?Long enough to transform the work. Short enough to get on with the career.

More time can absolutely mean more training. But more calendar doesn't automatically mean better training. Here's how each program uses the time you're giving it.

OUR TAKE

More time can mean more training. That doesn't automatically make it the better trade.

01

VCU gives you more.

Ten additional instructional weeks. Plus the graduate-school experience, a master's degree, and an optional summer internship window between years.

02

Miami gives you a lot more.

Thirty additional quarter-weeks. But as we just saw, Miami also uses part of that additional curriculum on production, tools, and adjacent specialist skills.

03

DAD chose concentration.

Fifty instructional weeks. Enough time to solve 60 briefs, generate hundreds of ideas, build the portfolio, and get to the career nine months sooner.

We don't want more of your time.We want more from the time we have.

VCU BRANDCENTER DESCRIBES ITS PROGRAM AS 2 YEARS / 4 SEMESTERS / 60 WEEKS. ITS CURRENT CALENDAR PUTS THE SUMMER BETWEEN YEARS AT APPROXIMATELY 14 WEEKS; BRANDCENTER SAYS SUMMER INTERNSHIPS ARE OPTIONAL AND TYPICALLY RUN 8–10 WEEKS.

02 / THE REPS

What are you actually practicing?Same goal. Different training priorities.

Every portfolio program gets a limited number of hours with you. The real question isn't how many different classes it can list. It's what those hours are training you to become.

LOOK AT THE CURRICULUM

What is each school choosing to spend your time on?

Learn to do more of it yourself.

Miami's portfolio curriculum extends beyond concepting into production, tools, adjacent specialist skills, personal branding, and awards strategy.

COURSE EXAMPLES

ART DIRECTION

User Experience Digital Photography Motion Graphics Vector Imaging Digital Imaging Short Cutz Interactive Concepting

COPYWRITING / BOTH TRACKS

Improv / Standup Sound Bites The Brand Called You Head to Head

OUR TAKE / MIAMI

An art director should understand every craft. That doesn't mean they need to train for every craft.

01

UNDERSTAND THE SPECIALISTS

UX, photography, motion, editing, development, and production all matter. A good art director should know what those disciplines can do.

02

DON'T TRAIN TO REPLACE THEM

At an agency, your job is to have the idea, know what it should become, and lead specialists toward it.

03

SPEND THE HOURS WHERE THEY COUNT

Learn enough of the tools to communicate and direct the work. Spend more of your training solving creative problems.

Miami trains you to do more of the production.

DAD trains you to be better at the part they can't outsource: the idea.

Expand the lens.

VCU surrounds creative craft with branding, business, experimentation, persuasion, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a broader understanding of the system around the work.

COURSE EXAMPLES

Business of Branding Creative Thinking Visual Storytelling Concept Development Brand Experiences Creative Fusion Experimentation Innovation Persuasion

OUR TAKE / VCU

VCU wants creatives to understand more of the business. We want creatives to become exceptional at the creative part first.

01

THE VALUE

Branding, business, strategy, experimentation, and collaboration can absolutely make you a smarter creative.

02

THE DIFFERENCE

VCU spends more curriculum expanding how creatives understand the problem.

03

OUR PRIORITY

DAD spends more of ours making creatives solve another one. Again, and again, and again.

You can learn the business around great ideas.

First, learn to have great ideas.

Train for the part of the job only you can do.

Learn the craft, strategy, tools, production, technology, and presentation skills you need. Then keep coming back to the thing everything else depends on: the idea.

WHAT KEEPS SHOWING UP

The Big Idea Campaign Development Campaign Development Campaign Development Campaign Stunts & Social Campaign Fire Drill Build-a-Brand

OUR TAKE / DAD

We deliberately repeat ourselves.

01

LEARN THE CRAFT

Tools, production, strategy, presentation, technology, and different mediums all belong in the education.

02

DON'T CONFUSE CRAFT WITH THE IDEA

Everything you make still depends on having something worth making in the first place.

03

REPEAT THE CORE JOB

Your first agency job is copywriter or art director. So we spend a ridiculous amount of your education practicing being one.

Learn enough of the tools to make, communicate, and direct the idea.

Then spend the rest of your time getting better at having one.
